Objective To develop a new device of assessing visual acuity in Chinese infants and children , and to evaluate the effectiveness of this device . Methods We developed a new computerized device of preferential looking ( PL ) , this device consists of visual acuity assessing system and eye-movement observeing system . Using the device ,we assessed the binocular visual acuity of 64 Chinese normal infants about 5 to 48 weeks of age in a clinical setting .Results The binocular visual acuity of Chinese normal infants develop with age , means of binocular visual acuity were 0.06 -> 0.10 -, 0.15 > 0.16^ 0.20 and 0.25 for infants at ages <8 , 9-16, 17-24^ 25-32 3> 3-40 , and 41-48 weeks respectively . 83.12% of infants completed the test , mean testing time was 5.83 min .Conclusions The study indicates that the new closed computerized PL device is a simple > effective and reliable tool for rapid assessment of visual acuity in Chinese young children .
