Objective The association among serum lipids, apolipoprotein E (ApoE) polymorphisms and stroke has been controversial. We investigated the serum lipids, ApoE genotypes and stroke subtypes (confirmed by CT or MRI findings) by case-control study in a Chinese population of Guangdong province, to provide an objective evidence for the clinic prevention and cure of stroke. Methods First-ever-stroke patients (n=60; cerebral infarction(CI), n=41, and intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH), n=19) aged 60 to 89 years were recruited from Zhujiang Hospital, Guangzhou. Healthy controls (n=30) were selected from the general population in the same area. Blood samples were collected to determin the concentrations of triglyceride(TG),total cholesterol (TC),low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDLc) ,high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDLc),very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDLc) and serum lipoprotein electrophoretagram(SLPG). ApoE genotypes were determined by restriction fragment-length polymorphism(RFLP) analysis. Results CI patients had higher levels of TG, Beta Lipoprotein (PLP) and Inter Beta Lipoprotein (intpLP) than the normal controls, and the ICH patients had lower level of AL, aLP than the normal controls .The ICH patients had also higher levers of BLP and int B LP than the normal subjects. Discriminant analysis was performed and resulted in the selection of SLPG as a better discriminators for stroke, which were valid in classifying 64% of the cases included in this study. ?2 carriers had a higher levers of TG and VLDLc than the ?3 and E 4 carriers ,and had a lower levers of aLP than the 3 carriers, 2/4 carriers had a higher levers of TG and VLDLc than the ?4 carriers, and 2/4 carriers had a higher levers of int B LP than the other three groups. Conclusion The CI and ICH had a different change of serum lipids; The SLPG is a more sensitive indicator to predict strode; The occurrence of stroke may be affected by interaction between serum lipids and ApoE gene polymorphisms.
