Socioeconomic status has been proven to be an important factor in the progress of cardiovascular disease in developed countries. But the result from studies in the developing countries is inconsistent. SES may affect through complex biological, behavior, economic and social mechanism. To study the relation between SES and danger factors of cardiovascular disease helps to find out the target populations who were in the high risk of cardiovascular disease. And more effective interventions need to be taken. Objective In developed countries socioeconomic status has been proven to be an important factor in the progress of cardiovascular disease. The present article analyses the association between socioeconomic status (includes education occupation income and marriage) and cardiovascular risk (age, gender, obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus) in the Yuexiu Area of Guangdong province, to provide scientific basis for the prevention of cardiovascular disease for the people who mostly need it in ChinaMethods The sample was determined by multistage sampling Spearman rank analysis, analysis of covariance, and logistic regression were used.Results1. Socioeconomic indicators (SES) in males were higher than in females. For men or women the risk of hypertension, obesity, and ventral obesity increased with age.2.After age and SES was adjusted, results were different from those age adjusted only. Among the four SES indicators the marriage status seemed to be the most influential factor. People (men or women) without spouse had higher risk of obesity than those who had spouse. Single persons and men with lower classic occupation were more easier to get obesity, especially for single men to get ventral obesity.3. The whole SES had a more obvious effect to the cardiovascular risk factors. One grade increase in SES caused the risk of obesity 0. 09 times (95%CI =1. 01-1. 16) higher than it before, and the riskof hypertension 0.14 times (95%CI =0.79-0.95) lower. Conclusion Marriage status seemed to be the most important measure of the four socioeconomic indicators in relation to the cardiovascular risk factors in the study population. The effect of education was not more important but more stable than other socioeconomic indicators. There is no obvious relation between income status and cardiovascular risk factors. The same as it between occupation status and obesity, or hypertension. People with lower socioeconomic status had higher leveis of cardiovascular risk factors and lower lever of obesity risk factors. The relevance between socioeconomic status and cardiovascular risk factors was inconsistent between males and females.
