Since 1950's, magnetic retainers have been widely applied in prosthetic dentistry, for it can decrease absorption of the residual ridges and increase the retention effectively to improve the retention and stability of denture, especially atrophy mandibular alveolar. However, since this technical prosthesis in our country began relative recently, its application limited to some degree and needs the follow-up study of clinical prognosis and effects. This study involved 9 patients who returned on recalls, in which the questionnaire was used to decide the patient's subjective evaluations, that is how satisfied the patients felt with overdenture of magnetic attachment and dentist evaluated the abutment health using objective criteria and detected the microflora changes in the gingival groove after the hygienic instructions by using the classical bacterial incubation and identification technique for the further discussion of the relationship between the hygienic instruction and abutment health. The result shows as following:1. Most of the patients were satisfied with retention and stability, mastication, outer ward appearance, speaking and comfort of overdenture with magnetic attachments, and have especially good perception of retention, stability and appearance of overdenture, which indicates that overdeture with magnetic attachments is a practical, advantageous and efficient prosthetic technique for edentous patients.2.No statistical differences of clinical index of abutment after insertion of overdentures were observed, and the abutments stay healthy during the study period.3.After the instruction in oral hygiene of the abutment and the prostheses, some differences in the total quantity of bacteria but no differences in the distribution of subgingival bacteria were observed. There are some effects of oral hygienic instruction in controlling the subgingival bacteria4. The distribution of bacteria concerning the periodontal disease increased according to the normal subgingival bacteria distribution, which indicates the increase of risk for periodontal disease in the patients of overdenture with magnetic attachments...
