The study purposes to construct a new availablemethod, called bromocresol purple colorimetric spectroscopic assay, for measuring the anti-trichomonas vaginalis activity of chemical compounds and natural products in vitro. It was applied to determine the anti-trichomonas activity of metronidazole and eight herbal extracts which are prescribed routinely in urban hospitals. The metronidazole test shows the same results as those found in the classical microscopic counting method. The other tests of herbal extracts demonstrated alternative anti-trichomonas activities and at the same time proved that a few herbal extracts of them have strong anti-trichomonas activities but others have little. The study also concluded that the new method can be operated more easily and take much less time and reach more accurate results, so the method can be routinely applied to both guide clinical rational use of drugs and screening of new anti-trichomonas drugs.
