The dried flower buds of Magnolia biondii Pamp. , main source of traditional Chinese drug Xinyi, were pulverized and extracted by refluxing with 95% ethanol. The extract was chromatographed on an adsorptive silica gel column. Four colorless crystals I , II, III, IV and one yellow powder V were isolated. The chemical structures of these compounds have been determined on the basis of their UV, IR, 'HNMR, "CNMR and MS spectral data. I , II , III and IV were identified as fargesin, pinoresinol dimethyl ether, magnolin and lirioresinol-B dimethyl ether, respectively. They are all bisepoxy lignans. V was elucidated to be biondnoid I , i.e. kaempferol-7-0-β - (6 -0-P-hydrocinnamoyl)-D-glucoside.The practicability of identifying traditional Chinese drug Xinyi by thin layer chromatography (TLC) using the above compounds as indicators has been tested. The results showed that identifying Xinyi by TLC using these compounds as indicators is very practicable. The TLC results also showed that there are great differences in the contents of these compounds in different species of Xinyi recorded in the 2000 edition of Chinese Pharmacopoeia.
