Objective To explore the effects of acrylonitrile exposure on lipid peroxidation and activities of anti-oxidizes of occupational population. Methods Select 97 workers occupationally exposed to acrylonitrile as the exposure group and 81 workers without any exposure to chemical toxicants and other hazards served as the control group. The two groups were statistically similar about age, sex, smoking habit and length of service. The level of MDA and the activities of VitE,VitC,GSH,CAT,GSH-Px and SOD in serum were determined in the two groups in April, 2002. Results The activities of VitE,VitC,GSH,GSH-Px and SOD of the exposure group were significantly lower than those of the control group, and the activity of CAT of the exposure group was significantly higher than that of the control group. The level of MDA between the two groups had no significant difference. When stratified by sex.no statistical difference could be found. The activity of VUC decreased along with the increase of the length of service in exposure group. In addition, the activities of VitE and GSH-Px of the workers with smoking habit significantly lower than those of the workers without smoking habit in the same group. There were linear regression relationship between the activities of VitC, GSH and the length of smoking habit in both exposure group and control group. When stratified by exposure level,no significant difference could be found. Conclusions Acrylonitrile exposure can decrease the ability to delete the reactive oxygen species, and heighten the sensibility to oxidative stress.
