Objective To understand residents, knowledge, attitude and practice toward SARS in Beijing and Tianjin and provide information to further propagating, preventing and controlling urgent public health problems. Methods 2700 residents in Beijing and Tianjin as subjects were surveyed, investigated by questionnaire filled in and taken back on spot. All the date was analysized by SPSSll.0 statistic software. Results Among 2700 subjects interviewed on the SARS related questions, 97.3% could give the answers. More than 90% knew well the preventative methods, main symptom and epidemic character .95.9% paid attention to the reports about SARS.92.1% held the optimistic attitude when they or their families had symptom of SARS. While few people knew treatment and prognosis. In the aspect of attitude, female showed more fear than male. During the SARS, subjects took active methods, developed good life style and enhanced the consciousness of preventing SARS.97.5% were satisfied with the local government and 86.5% thought hospitals and healthcare workers should give a great honor. Conclusion Propaganda about SARS of government was timely and effective. Correct attitude and method of residents played an important role in controlling SARS.
