Cardiovascular disease is the principal cause of death in Western and some Asia countries and atherosclerosis is the pathological element. Consequently the protection and treatment of atherosclerosis become especially important. For explore the function of black sesame oil on atherosclerosis , the effect of black sesame oil was observed on the rabbits of atheroclerosis which was contrasted by evening primrose oil and white sesame oil.40 rabbits were randomly divided into five groups: basic fodder group, cholesterol fodder group, evening primrose oil group, black sesame oil group, white sesame oil group. Firstly the last four groups were made-up into atherosclerosis models by feeding high cholesterol fodder for 5 weeks. Then the rabbits of last three groups were fed respectively with basic fodder plus plants oil for several weeks. The concentration of total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C), triglyceride(TG) in serum of rabbits were determined and the concentrations of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and malodialdehyde(MDA) in cardiac muscle were determined too. The pathologic change of coronary artery and cardiac muscle was observed as well.The results showed: (1) after 5 weeks of feeding with plants oil fodder, the concentration of TC in three plants oil groups were much lower than the cholesterol fodder group(p<0.01); Concentration of TG and HDL-C of plants oil groups were lower than cholesterol fodder group but didn't show significant difference compare with cholesterol fodder group; concentration of LDL-C of black sesame oil group was significantly lower than cholesterol fodder group(p<0.01), but the evening primrose oil group and white sesame oil group shows no significant difference compared with cholesterol fodder group. (2) after feeding with plants oil fodder for 15 weeks, the concentration of TC of the evening primrose oil group, black sesame oil group and white sesame oil group were significantly lower than cholesterol fodder group(p<0.01), and the black sesame oil group shows significant difference contrast with evening primrose oil group and white sesame oil group (p<0.01) ; Concentration of TG and HDL-C of black sesame oil and white sesame oil groups were lower than cholesterol fodder group but shows no significant difference. Theconcentration of LDL-C of black sesame oil group was significantly lower than the other groups(p<0.01). (3) The concentration of SOD of evening primrose oil group was a little higher than cholesterol fodder group, the concentrations of SOD of black sesame oil group and white sesame oil group were a little lower than cholesterol fodder group, but shows no significant difference(p>0.05). The concentration of MDA in evening primrose oil group and black sesame oil group were a little higher than cholesterol fodder group but shows no significant difference (p>0.05). (4) The pathologic observation shows: Smooth and entire coronary artery vessel wall was seen in basic fodder group. In cholesterol fodder group round and irregular yellow spots with the size of pinpoint and green bean or lipid strips were seen at aortic endomembrane. In evening primrose oil group and white sesame oil group aortic endomembrane were smooth and the lipid flecks were less and smaller than cholesterol fodder group, the pathological change was lighter. In black sesame oil group the pathological change of aortic endomembrane was lighter than in evening primrose oil group and white sesame oil group and was significantly different compared with cholesterol fodder group. Observed by microscope, notable changes in basic fodder group was not seen, but in cholesterol fodder group endomembrane incrassated clearly and abundant of foam cells were seen , in mesomembrane those smooth muscle cells arranged turbulently. Further magnified pictures showed foam cells in different size and shape, the cytoplast consisted of great lot of lipid and the nucleus showed different kinds of shapes such as round and strip.
