Based on the theories about apoplexy not only in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) but also in modern medicine and the views of Professor Li Ji-Ying, the author's supervisor, it is put forward in this thesis that the occlusion of the brain collateral channel caused by the disorder of blood and qi inside the brain is the key pathogenesis for acute cerebral infarction, and the main treatment is "restoring consciousness and reinforcing collaterals" , including many function like adjusting yin and yang, promoting qi and blood circulation to remove the occlusion in the brain collateral channel. Our study applied the acupuncture therapy in a creative way. Our observations suggest that acupuncture therapy of "restoring consciousness and reinforcing collaterals" treating acute ischemic stroke at at acute stage is effective and safe.At the acute stage, patients were divided into one treatment group (20 cases)treated with acupuncture therapy of "restoring consciousness and reinforcing collaterals" , another control group (20 cases) treated with only acupuncture on body. Routine western medicine therapies were administered to all groups. 28 days constituted one treatment course. The result showed that at acute stage the acupuncture therapy of "restoring consciousness and reinforcing collaterals" can more evidently develop the patients' status of life than the acupuncture only on body. The clinical evident effective rates in the treatment group (60%) are superior to those of the control group (45%).Animal experiments have indicated that the therapy of scalp acupuncture can markedly reduce the neurological deficit, the brain infarct volume and the brain edema of male Sprague-Dawley rats model whose middle cerebral artery (MCA) were occluded by emboli, can raise NO and SOD, decrease MDA in the brain tissue of rats, reduce the possibility of Intraparenchymal hemorrhage, and has some protecting effect on the brain. The result showed that the effect of scalp acupuncture therapy on the experimental animals has no significant difference from that of the thrombolytic therapy. But the effect of acupuncture group is superior to that of the placebo-controlled group.
