| Objective: To evaluate the effect and safety of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) on treating erectile dysfunction(ED) of aged man. Moreover, to evaluate the speciality and sensitivity of insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) as the curative effect index.Methods: Forty aged 40~75 male patients with ED were devided into two groups randomly and were injected rhGH 4IU(group A) or 8IU(group B). The patients were followed up about 12 weeks after 12 weeks treatments. Then they answerd the questios of international index of erectile function-15(IIEF-15) during the treatment stage of 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks and follow-up stage of 12 weeks. The serum IGF-1, total testosterone(TT) and prostatic specific antigen(PSA) were mensurated before and after treatment. The data were analysed through statistic method.Results: The total efficiency rate to ED of group A was 60% and group B was70%. The IIEF-5 grade of follow-up of group A was equal to the treatment stage level of 4 weeks. The IIEF-5 grade of follow-up of group B was equal to the treatment stage level of 8 weeks. The IIEF-5 grade of group A and B were no notable difference(P>0.05). IGF-1 level before treatment was no notable difference compared with the normal public. IGF-1 level after treatment was obviously higher than before treatment and the normal public. No obvious side effect was found during the treatment and follow-up.Conclusions: Small dosage rhGH(4IU~8IU/week) for 8 weeks can obviously improve the erectile function and heighten IGF-1 level of aged man. IGF-1 can be used to estimate the curative effect of using rhGH. It is safe and little side effect for adults to use rhGH for shot time and small dosage.
