ObjectiveTo observe the early effect of extracorporeal Shockwave treatment (ESWT) on distraction osteogenesis of rabbit tibia and to investigate the mechanisms of promoting ossification. This study will provide theoretical and experimental bases of ESWT in clinic. MethodsTo set up animal model, 30 adult New Zealand white rabbits were used. After osteotomy of left tibia, improved Orthofix M-100 bone fixator was fitted on it. After 5 days, bone lengthening of 1 cm was obtained over 10 days. Randomly the animals were divided into ESWT and control groups. The shock wave setting used was 0. 54 mJ/mm2 and 1000 shots each were applied to the central areas. There was no treatment on Control group. Then the animals were divided into three sub-groups, and were killed at 45, 60 and 75 days after...
