ObjectiveTo analyze the facts which affect the prognosis of acute paraquat poisoning and decrease the mortality by investigating an effective treatmentMethodsA retrospective analysis of clinical data of 13 cases was performed.Results11patients died in hospital, and the other two died at home, the mortality is 100%. The patients without dialysis died of circulatory collapse or renal failure markedly more than those with dialysis (55.6% to 0).ConclusionsParaquat poisoning is characterized by severe free radical injury, which causes early multiorgan failure with circulatory collapse and late pulmonary fibrosis with respiratory failure. Multiorgan failure with circulatory collapse is associated with 100% mortality and is a major cause of early death within 3 days of paraquat ingestion. Blood purification could not provide a survival benefit in paraquat poisoning. However, it could allow for the successful management of a paraquat-poisoned patient in the time in which multiorgan failure could lead to immediate death caused by circulating collapse.
