Objective To investigate the change in menstrual cycle characteristic and early follicular phase hormones following laparoscopic tubal sterilization by electrocoagulation. Methods Fifty women with tubal sterilization by electrocoagulation were recruited to this study. There were 50 women without tubal sterilization as control group who were randomly selected. We compared menstrual cycle changes from 5 years after the first year of menarche with completion of the baseline questionnaire in women of the two groups. All women were examined for serum FSH,LH,E2 in early follicular phase. Results Cycle length, cycle regularity, menses length, flow volume, dysmenorrhea and hormone levels were similar in women with and without a history of tubal ligation(P >0.05).Conclusions We found no significant change in menstral cycle characteristics or hormone levels in women with or without a history tubal ligation. Laparoscopic tubal sterilization by electrocoagulation is a safe and effective method of contraception .
