Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the therapy of recombinant adenoviras-p53 injection (rAdp53) together with transcatheter hepatic arterial chemoembolization(TACE) for advanced hepatic carcinoma(HCC).Methods: A total of 82 patients with advanced HCC were treated only by transcatheter hepatic arterial chemoembolization (control group). Another 68 patients with HCC were treated by TACE combined with recombinant adenovirus-p53 injection (p53 treatment group). Results: The total effective rate of the p53 treatment group was 58.3%, and that of the control group was 26.5% with significant difference (P<0.05). The occurrence of gastrointestinal symptoms was lower than that in control group (P<0.05). 3 mo and 6-mo survival in the p53 treatment group were significantly higher than control group (P<0.01).Conclusions: The approach for patients with HCC injected intratumorally with rAdp53 was safe and effective. Our results supported that rAdp53 is a potentially effective gene therapeutic agent in HCC treatment.
