It is critical to seek ideal seeding cells for the development of cardiovascular tissue engineering. In this study human embryonic cardiac stem cells were isolated from embryonic hearts from 4-6 weeks postfertilization human embryos obtained by drug abortion. To establish the cells lines, we identified and cultured the cells, investigated their biological characteristics, and induced them to differentiate into cardiomyocytes and smooth muscle cells. The results show that embryonic cardiac stem cells, which have the ability to undergo self-renew, are multipotent. In conclusion, embryonic cardiac stem cells lines have been primarily established. The cells are new cell sources for cardiovascular tissue engineer.
