Objective: To identify factors affecting the quality of life in adult patients withepilepsy. Methods: One hundred and seven adult epileptic outpatients were included. Qualityof life was evaluated by the Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-31 (QOLIE-31). Univariate analysis and multiple regression analysis were used to determine factors affecting the quality of life in adult patients with epilepsy. Results: Gender, marital status, the type of employment and the type of antiepilepticdrugs were not factors that influenced quality of life (P>0.05). Factors such as seizure frequency, education level, economic status, seizure type, the number of antiepileptic drugs, age and duration of epilepsy affected quality of life. Seizure frequency was negatively associated with scores on seizure worry, overall quality of life, emotional well-being, energy/fatigue, cognitive functioning, social functioning and total scores (P<0.05). Economic status was positively associated with scores on emotional well-being, social functioning, overall quality of life and total scores (P<0.05). Education level was positively associated with scores on seizure worry, cognitive functioning and total scores (P<0.05). Duration of epilepsy was negatively associated with scores on social functioning (P<0.05). Age was negatively associated with scores on overall quality of life (P<0.05). Scores on cognitive functioning and medication effects in patient with partial seizures were higher than with generalized seizures (P<0.05). Scores on overall quality of life in patient treated with monotherapy were higher than polypharmacy (P<0.05).Conclusion:1. Gender, marital status, the type of employment and the type of antiepileptic drugs were not factors that influenced quality of life.2.Seizure frequency, seizure type, economic status, education level, the number of antiepileptic drugs, age and duration of epilepsy had influence on quality of life.3. Seizure frequency, seizure type, economic status and education level affected multiple domains of quality of life.
