Objctive To study the pathologic changes of the palatopharyngeal muscle in patients with OSASMethods Different analyses have been done on the palatopharyngeal muscles in patients with 0SAS(n=31)and controls (n=ll) . the sections were sequentially stained for HE, myofibrilar Troponin I Antibody. All speciments were evaluated by transmission election microscopy (TEM). Rsults 29 of 30patients with OSAS that evaluated by transmission election microscopy (TEM) have significiently different degree pathologic changes. While 2 among 10 controls have lightly myofibrilar edema or hypertrophy, the others have not any pathologic changes (p<0.05). Immunohistochemistorical results of all specimens sections stained for TropninI Antibody have shown that mean negnative grey degree evaluations are 146. 2989±10.7249 and 107.5014+4.8065 in both groop of study and controls respectively(p<0.05). semi-quantitive analyses on TropninI have been shown that 7 specimens of the patiens with OSAS are positive,1 case strongly positive;8 specimens of the controls are strongly positive, 3 positive.Conclution Our study suggest that myofibrilar pathologic chages and functional disturbance of palatopharyngeal muscles(pharyngeal dilator muscles)may play an important role in causing the supper airway collapse in OSAS.
