Laggera pterodonta (Compositae) is one of important medicinal plants producedmainly in Yunnan Province, China. Pharmacological experiments indicate that thisplant has anti-tumor, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, phlegm-removing,cough-inhibiting, and anti-malarial functions. It has been used as a medicinal herb tocure bronchitis, influenza, angina and malaria in clinical for many years. Its majorchemical constituents, including eudesmane sesquiterpenes, sesquiterpenoidglucosides and flavonoids have been reported. In order to search the active naturalproducts, we began to study the chemical constituents from Laggera pterodonta. Bycolumn chromatography, including Silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, Toyopearl HW-40and preparative HPLC, twenty-two compounds were isolated from the EtOH extractof Laggera pterodonta, and three new (1-3) and eleven known compounds (4-14)were identified by means of 1H-NMR,13C-NMR and 2D-NMR spectra. Theirstructures were elucidated as pterodontriol E (1), pterodontriol F (2), 2α-hydroxypterodontic acid (3), dehydroabietic acid (4), pterodontic acid (5), 1β-hydroxypterodontic acid (6), 3β-hydroxy pterodontic acid (7), pterodondiol (8), pterodontriolB (9), laggerone A (10), pterodontriol C (11), pterodontriol A (12), penduletin (13),and chrysosplenetin (14), respectively. The P.E, EtOAc, BuOH extracts and isolated compounds, were screened byantitumor activity experiments. The P.E, EtOAc extracts and compounds 5, 6 revealedantitumor activities. In the lymphocyte transformation experimation, The P.E, EtOAc extracts andcompounds 3, 5, 7, 10 and 11 revealed a significant distinction to the concanavalin(Con A) control group (p<0.01, n = 6) and positively showed immunosuppressiveactivity.
