Background: Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1)receptors play an important role in tumrigenesis, progression and apoptosis in many kinds of tumor, but their role in esophageal carcinoma is yet unclarified.Aims: To investigate the expression of TGF-β1 Receptor Ⅰ(TpR Ⅰ) and TGF-β1 Receptor Ⅱ (TβR Ⅱ) in esophageal carcinoma and their relation to clinicopathological parameters. Methods: Immunohistochemistry method was used to detect the expression of TβR Ⅰ and TβR Ⅱ in 45 paraffin-embedded specimens of esophageal squamous carcinoma and 23 near by carcinoma tissues. The relationship between TβR Ⅰ, TβR Ⅱ expression and clinicopathological parameters was analyzed by statistic method. Results: 1.The positive expression rate of TβR Ⅰ (68.89%) in esophageal carcinoma tissues is lower than that in near by carcinoma mucosa (95.65%) (p<0.05). Also, there is a significantly lower positive expression rate of TβRⅡ in esophageal carcinoma specimens (46.67%)than that in normal tissues in the terminal of resected samples.2. In esophageal tissues, there is no difference of the positive expression rate of TβR Ⅰ between the better differentiation group(68.97%) and the worse differentiation group (68.75%), (p>0.05).Also, there is no difference of the positive expression rate of TβR Ⅰ between the serosal or extraserosal infiltration group(64.71%) and the subserosal group (81.82%) (p>0.05). And there is no difference of the positive expression rate of TβR Ⅰ between the lymphnode metastasis negtive group (68.18%) and the lymphnode metastasis positive group (69.57%),(p>0.05). There is no difference of the positive expression rate of TβR Ⅰ between the Ⅰ/Ⅱ group(76.00%)and the Ⅲ/Ⅳ group (60.00%)(p>0.05).3.In esophageal tissues, there is a significant difference of the positive expression rate of TβR Ⅱ between the better differentiation group(62.07%)and the worse differentiation group(18.75%),(p<0.01). Also there is a significant difference of the positive expression rate of TβR Ⅱ between the serosal or extraserosal infiltration group (35.29%) and the subserosal group (81.82%),(p<0.01).And there is a significant difference of the positive expression rate of TβR Ⅱ between the lymphnode metastasisnegtive group(68.18%) and the lymphnode metastasis positive group (26.09%), (p<0.01). There is a higher positive expression rate of TPRII in the I / II group(64.00%) than that in the III/IV group (25.00%),(p<0.01).4.In esophageal squamous carcinoma specimens, there is no correlation of the positive expression between TpR I and TPRII (r=-0.17,p>0.05).The positive expression of TpR I is significantly higher than TPR II (p<0.01).Conclusion: l.The TpR I and TpRIIexpress mainly in cell membrane, also in cytoplasm. The expression of TPR I and TPRII are strong in the near by carcinoma tissues but are weak in the esophageal squamous carcinoma specimens. The expression of TpR I shows no relationship with clinicopathological factors in esophageal carcinoma.2.The expression of TPRII shows strong relationship with clinicophathological factors in esophageal carcinoma, which suggests that the weakened expression of TpR II maybe play fundamental role in esophageal caricinogenesis.3.TpRII is a better anti-oncogene subject than TpR I to reflect the development of esophageal carcinoma.
