OBJECTIVE: To study the association between Hp infection and expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and microvessel density (MVD) in general population, chronic atrophic gastritis patients also gastric cancer patients. To evaluate the influence of Hp infection in the growth, invasion, and metastasis of gastric cancer.METHOD: Tissue samples were collected from 112 patients with gastric cancer, 86 patients with chronic atrophic gastritis, and 62 patients with chronic superficial gastritis to serve as control group. Hp was identified by rapid urease, 14C-breath test and Giemsa-staining. The expression of VEGF and MVD in the samples was detected by immuno-histochemical SP-method, and the results were analysed for the relations between Hp infection, expression of VEGF and MVD, and their clinical pathology.RESULTS: Expression of VEGF and MVD between Hp infection and non-infected, normal gastric mucosa shows no significant difference(P>0.05). As in Hp infected gastric carcinoma, VEGF and MVD expressions are higher than Hp negative group, there is significant differences (P<0. 01) . In Hp infected chronic atrophic gastritis group, VEGF and MVD expression is higher than Hp negative group, there is significant differences too.(P<0. 01). Expression of VEGF and MVD in gastric carcinoma has significant differences than other cases (P<0. 01), but no significant differences between CAG and controls.CONCLUSION: Hp infection results in increase expression of VEGF and MVD in gastric cancer. VEGF and MVD show a close relation to vascular formation in gastric cancer, hence an important factor which influences the growth, invasiveness and metastasis of gastric cancer.
