Objective To detect the protein and mRNA expression of endothelial cell specific molecule-1(ESM-1), integrinPi and the protein expression of E-cadherin in tissues from salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma. To investigate their roles in carcinogenesis, biological behavior and to evaluate their clinicopathologic significances. Methods The protein expression of ESM-1 , integrinβ1 and E-cad and the mRNA expression of ESM-1 and integrinPi were examined by immunohistochemistry and in situhybridization respectively in 52 cases of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma and in 11 "normal" salivary gland tissues adjacent to neoplastic lesions on a tissue microarray platform. Results 1. No case was lost during sectioning or staining in tissue microarrays which carries 52 cases of salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma and in 11 "normal" salivary gland tissues adjacent to neoplastic lesions . 2. The protein and mRNA expression of ESM-1 in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma were significantly higher than that in "normal" salivary gland tissues (P <0.01) , and were not correlated to patiant's gender, histological typing, lymph node metastasis and nerve fiber encroachment (P>0.05 ). 3. The protein and mRNA expression of integrinPi in salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma was significantiy higher than that in "normal" salivary gland tissues (P<0.01) , and positively correlated to lymph node metastasis and nerve fiber encroachment ,but no correlation to patiant's gender , and histological typing was evident (P<0.05) . 4. E-cad protein expression was patently...
