Different extraction methods and organic solvents, different analysis methods, musk GC fingerprint and antimicrobial activities of musk extracts were studied in this paper. By compared with fake musk, the methods of musk authentication and the standards of musk quality control were established.The effect of different extraction methods and different organic solvents on the extracts of liposoluble constituents of musk was compared by Ultraviolet Scanning (US), Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC) and Gas Chromatography (GC). The results showed that the effect of ultrasonic extraction was better than infusion extraction and refluxing extraction, and ether was superior to ethanol and n-hexane.Ten natural musk samples of forest musk deer were extracted by ultrasonic extraction and ether. According to "the technical requirement of fingerprint study of Chinese traditional medicine injections", the GC fingerprint of musk was established by common peaks of GC atlas, and they were applied to assess the quality of musk. The comparability of ten musk samples' GC fingerprint was calculated by Spss 11.5, with the relative area of common peaks, and cosine as evaluative method. The results showed that the comparability of ten musk samples was very high. And it suggested that GC fingerprint of musk can be used to control the quality of musk.A number of musk samples extracted by ultrasonic extraction and ether were analyzed by US, TLC, GC fingerprint to evaluate their quality. The content of muscone was also detected in this paper. And the four kinds of musk authentication methods were compared. The results indicated that US and content of muscone can't be effectively enough to authenticate musk quality. TLC and GC fingerprint can be used to identify musk quality, and the latter is better than the former.Musk samples were extracted by ether, ethanol and water with different extraction methods.
