Objective: To evaluate the condition of nasal airway objectively and quantificationally by acoustic rhinometry(AR) and combining roentgenographic cephalometry to observe the effects of dentofacial development in children with adenoid hypertrophy. Methods: The study consisted of two groups. One group were children with adenoid hypertrophy or adenotonsillar hypertrophy (groupⅠ) and the other group were normal subjects (groupⅡ). All cases were all from the ENT department of Bethune International Peace Hospital from dec.2004 to jan.2006.In the groupⅠ, there were 30 children , aged from 3 to 12(6.6±2.3 years) years, which were 18 males and 12 females . The cases who had symptom of nasal airway obstruction for more than two years were selected, which were diagnosed as adenoids hypertrophy and had a surgical indication because of adenoids go with tonsil hypertrophy. All patients'nasal obstruction symptom scored through questionnaire. Children who were using an orthodontic apparatus or had craniofacial syndromes were excluded from this study.
