Objective: To evaluate the ability of conventional axial images and reconstructed images in diagnosis of larynx.Materials and methods: 35cases, 15 normal and 20 patients with larynx diseases, which include 6 benign cases, 14 malignant, were scanned by MDCT (GE Lightspeed 16) in axial. All reconstructed data were transferred to workstation for MPR and three dimensional reconstructions, including CTVE, SSD, Raysum. To review and evaluate the images of conventional axial and reconstructed images, correlate them with the results of pathology, operation and clinical followings. Results: MPR and three dimentional reconstructed images were better than axial views in demonstration of vocal cord, ventricle of larynx, and air way, which can show in different orientations and more directly. The diagnosis accuracy was 5% higher with reconstructed images to larynx diseases to axial views alone. MPR and three dimentional reconstructed images were superior to axial views in displaying of site, size, morphology of diseases, and changes of air ways. MPR was also superior in showing the infiltration. Conclusion: Each reconstructed method of MDCT has its own superiority in diagnosis of larynx. They can not only provide clear images, which assist in diagnosis confidence, but also can show the diseases more directly for clinical doctors, with clear displaying of relationship between diseases and important larynx structures. Reconstructed images are helpful in detection the location and character of diseases, and are good complementary techniques to axial images.
