Objective To investigate and summarize the experience of diagnosis and surgical treatment of primary retroperitoneal tumor ( PRT) nearby kidney .Methods Clinical data of 21 patients with PRT nearby kidney treated fromJanuary 2003 to January 2007 were retrospectively analyzed including image examination , pathologic examination and surgical procedure. Results 9 cases of benign PRT , and 12 malignant PRT were diagnosed by operation and postoperative pathologic examination. Of the 9 patients with benign tumor , 8 underwent complete resection (88.89 %) with adjacent organ resection in 1 cases. Of the 12 patients with malignant tumor , 10 underwent complete resection (83.33 %) with adjacent organ resection in 3 cases. In 2 cases of recurrent malignant PRT ,1 cases underwent complete resection and 1 only biopsy. Conclusions Because of lacking of clinical early manifestations, preoperative image examination is crucial for the diagnosis and the evaluation of the operative resectability. Complete resection is the key for the treatment of PRT. Reoperation is the effective treatment for the recurrent tumor.
