Objectives: Neurotic depression is a common disease, especially because of rapidlydevelopment of society. It is a major problem of neurotic disorder in class worldwide. To test the clinical observation of neurotic depression patients by using acupuncturewhich promotes a substitute method to treat neurotic depression. Methods: 60 neurotic depression patients were selected by considering not only theirwestern medicine diagnosis but also their Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis. Itdivided into acupuncture group (30 cases) and western medicine group (30 cases)randomly. The acupuncture group was treated for 3 months and western medicinegroup was given Fluoxetine for 3 months too. When the treatment finished, thecurative effects of two groups were scored by Hamilton depression scale (HAMD)and its reduction rate. And they were compared with each other. Results: There were remarkable differences in HAMD scores of each group beforeand after treatment (P<0.05). There were no marked variations in scores and curativeeffects of two groups after treatment. Conclusion: It is a curative effect of treating neurotic depression by acupuncture andit is convenience. The curative effect of acupuncture was as the same as that ofwestern medicine, Fluoxetine, so acupuncture may be thought as a substitute therapyfor treating depressive neurosis and preventing the side effects of western medicine.
