| ObjectiveTo investigate the level of Vitamin D receptor (VDR) expressionin the tissue of skin basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cellcarcinoma (SCC), and to evaluate its relation with clinicopathologicbehavior.MethodsParaffin-embedded tissue sections containing 30 BCC,28 SCC and10 normal controls were analyzed by S-P immunohistochemistrytechnique for the VDR expression and orientation. The level ofexpression of VDR were quantitated by image analysis in the context ofhistopathological parameters. The different expression of VDR among allthe tissue sections were compared. The relationship among the expressionof VDR, age, sex, course of diseases, histological classification, pathology grade, and clinical stages of BCC and SCC were also analyzed.Results1. The PU values of VDR expression are 212.18±2.89,202.55±5.20, 193.62±3.78 in normal skin, BCC, SCC, respectively. The expression of VDR was statistically significant lower in BCC, SCCthan that in normal controls (P<0.05, P<0.05). Compared with BCC,the expression of VDR was decreased in SCC(P<0.05); 2. There was no significant difference of VDR expression ofcarcinoma with the age, sex, course of diseases (P>0.05);3. A significant negative correlation was found between the VDRexpression and histological classification of BCC (P<0.05);4. A significant positive correlation was found between the VDRexpression and differentiation grade of SCC (P<0.05).Conclusion1. Expression of VDR is significant down-regulation inBCC and SCC. The low level expression may be associated with tumourinvading and differentiation, which may be one of the reasons for theuncontrolled proliferation and poor differentiated status of BCC andSCC;2. The lower expression of VDR is associated with higher degree oftumor invading in BCC, and tumor aggressiveness is also related tolocation of VDR .The expression and location of VDR may be one ofmaker of evaluating degree of malignancy;3. The higher expression of VDR is associated with higher degree ofdifferentiation grade in SCC, and tumor differentiation grade is alsorelated to location of VDR .The expression and location of VDR may beone of maker of evaluating degree of differentiation and prognosis ofmalignancy. |
