Objective To investigate the effects of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and anesthesia on the plasma levels of endothelin (ET) and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in elderly patients. Methods Forty patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy were divided into < 65 years (44±17) and > 65 years (71±5) groups according to their age (n=20 in each group). The plasma levels of ET and CGRP were measured before surgery, after intubation, at the time of gallbladder removal, immediately after surgery and 24 hours after surgery by radioimmunoasssay. Results There was no significant differences in ET levels between the two groups before the surgery (P > 0.05) ; the ET levels in both groups gradually increased after the intubation, but more significantly in the > 65 years group (P < 0.05) ; the increased ET levels were maintained during the surgery in both groups, but they were higher in the > 65 years group than those in the < 65 years group (P < 0.01) ; when the surgery was completed, ET in the >65 years group continued to increase, but it decreased in the < 65 years group, and there was significantly difference between the two groups (P < 0.01) . ET levels in both groups at 24 hours after the surgery returned to the levels before surgery, and there was no significant difference between the two groups (P > 0.05) .The CGRP levels had not significantly changed during the perioperative period in the < 65 years group. In the >65 years group, CGRP levels decreased after anaesthesia, but increased during the surgery, and then reached the highest level at the time of the surgery completed and was higher than those before surgery (P < 0.01) . CGRP levels were significant different between the two groups after intubation and immediately after surgery (P < 0.05) .The changes of CGRP were not related to the changes of ET (Pearson correlation r=0.15, P = 0.137) .Conclusion The levels of ET and CGRP had significantly changed in elderly patients than those in young patients, especially for ET. There was no relationships between the changes of ET and CGRP.
