Clinical Studies On Treatment Of Varicose Veins Of Lower Limb With Xiao Liu Capsules

Objective: The study is to observe the clinical therapeutic effects of treatment of varicose veins of lower limb with Xiao Liu capsules initially, and to investigate its possible therapeutic mechanism, for accumulating experiences of deepgoing and systematic studdies further.Methods: Seventy-two patients diagnosed as varicose veins of lower limb were selected from May 2006 to March 2007. They were randomly divided into treatment group(n=36) and control group(n=36). Patients in the former group orally took Xiao Liu capsules twice, third per day for 2 month, and those in the latter group received micronised purified flavonoid fraction once, tiwce per day. Patients with chronic venous ulcer in the two groups were treated with changing dressings per day meanwhile taking medicine orally. The improvements of symptoms and the variance of MDA, SOD, GSH-Px in blood-serum were observed during 2 month between the treatment group and the control groupb, also between before and after treatment of two groups themselves. The symptoms included such as the limb heaviness, pain, tiredness, night cramp, weeping dermatitis and pruritus, hyperpigmentation, as well as the girth of anks and square measure of ulcers. The girth of anks was measured using Leg-O-Meter to evaluate the degree of swelling. The square measure of ulcers was the product of multiplication of the maximun and the minimun diameter. The methods of measuring MDA, SOD, GSH-Px were thiobarbituric acid method (TBA), colorimetric method, dithio-bis-nitrobenzoic acid method (DTNB) by turns. The test data was managed by the statistics software of SPSS13.0.Results: Sixty-two patients of seventy-two were involved into the result anlysis. Ten patients were lost during the study.1. The symptoms were all improved after therapy between the treatment group and the control group. The diffrence of the two groups was not significant(P＞0.05). The effective rates of the two groups were proximal. The effective rates of limb heaviness, pain, tiredness, night cramp were close to or above 80%.2. The girth of anks were all shortened after therapy between the treatment group and the control group. The diffrence of the two groups was not significant, both of left and right(P＞0.05).3. The square measure of ulcers were all decreased after therapy between the treatment group and the control group. The diffrence of the two groups was not significant(P＞0.O5). And among them 1 ulcer was cured in treatment group and 2 in control group. Other's were improved in the square measure and color.4. The level of MDA in blood-serum were all decreased and the SOD, GSH-Px were all increased after therapy both of the two groups compared with before therapy. The three indexes' variance of the two groups after therapy were all not significant (P＞0.05). But there were significant diffrences all of the three indexes comparing before with after treatment of two groups themselves(P＜0.05).Conclusions: The symptoms of varicose veins of lower limbs could be improved effectivly by Xiao Liu capsules. The medicine was safe, effective and tolerated with little toxic effection. The possible therapeutic mechanism, was related to counteract injury of oxygen free radical(OFR).
