Advances in medical practice have significantlyincreased the longevity of our during the last 100 years. As a result, thenumber of persons with dementia is growing dramatically. As more attentionhas become focused on dementia, the significance of the contribution ofcerebrovascular disease has become apparent, and it is now recognized tobe the second most frequent cause of dementia in Western countries andperhaps the most frequent cause of dementia in Asian countries.Objectives: To study the effects and mechanisms of Naoliqing Capsuleon the rat model of vascular dementia.Methods: Model rats of chronic forebrain ischemia were subjected topermanent bilateral common carotid arteries ligation for fourty-five days.The water maze test showed significant deficient of learn and memoryfunction in model group. The blood rheologic characteristics and theactivity of AchE in cerebral issues were determined routinely. Toinvestigate the apoptosis of the cranial nerve of dementia rats by themethods of TUNEL.Results: The results showed significant improvement of themodel rats'ability of learn and memory. Compared with the rheologic characteristicsof normal groups, the modelling group's blood became densier andstickier(p<0.05).The blood rheologic characteristics of high dosedNaoliqing groups were signifilanfly improved(p<0.05). However, thetherapeutic effects of the high dosed Naoliqing group were similar to thatof the Nicergoline group(p>0.05). High dosed of Naoliqing could markedly decreased the activity of AchE in rat brain(p>0.05). Compared with thenormal groups, the model group's can decrease the number of apoptosis ofthe CA1 region' nerve cell. the therapeutic effects of the high dosedNaoliqing group were similar to that of the Nicergoline group(p>0.05).Conclusion: Naoliqing has the effects of improving blood theologiccharacteristics and cerebral blood circulation, and had the effect ofimproving the function of cholinergic nerve systerm in brain and regulatingthe metabolism of Ach to imorove memory function.
