Objective: To explore the role of leptin and ghrelin in the growth anddevelopment of 2-7 years old children and identify their relationship. Methods: 30 children born small for gestational(SGA group), 20children born appropriate for gestational and 30 stunting children bornappropriate/large for gestational age(non-SGA stunting group) were included. The concentrations of leptin in three groups were detected byradioimmunoassay. The concentrations of ghrelin in three groups weredetected by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Anthropometric indicatorsof all the children were measured at the same time. These result wereanalyzed by t test and pearson correlation test.Result:①The HtSDS was -0.1072±0.6631 in AGA group and-0.7729±1.3425 in SGA group, and statistic difference is existed between thetwo groups(p<0.05). The WtSDS was -0.4913±0.7398 in AGA group and-1.1258±1.0598 in SGA group, and statistic difference is existed between thetwo groups(p<0.05). There was no statistic difference in gender, age andcalorie intake between the two groups. But threre was statistic difference in calorie intake between the groups of AGA and non-SGA children②Theconcentrations of serum leptin was 2.3433±1.6661 in AGA group, and2.1088±1.2387 in SGA group, no statistic difference is found between thetwo groups(p>0.05 ).③The serum leptin had no correlation with sex and age,but serum leptin had partial correlation with the calorie intake variables withage and gender as the controlling.④The concentrations of serum leptin was2.3433±1.6661 in AGA group, 1.3040±0.7502 in non-SGA stunting group, and statistic difference can be seen between the two groups(p<0.05).Thelevel of leptin in AGA group was higher than in non-SGA stunting group. Innon-SGA children, the concentrations of serum leptin was 1.9714±1.4063 innormal weight non-SGA children, 1.0037±0.3890 in under weight non-SGAchildren, which presents statistic difference between the two groups(p<0.05).The level in normal weight non-SGA group was higher than in underweight non-SGA group. In SGA group, The concentrations of serum leptinwas 2.0044±1.4773 in stunting group, 2.1406±1.1928 in normal height group, there was no statistic difference between the two groups(p>0.05). And, theconcentrations of serum leptin was 2.0619±1.234 in normal weight group,2.263±1.34 in under weight group, and there was no statistic differencebetween the two groups(p>0.05).⑤The concentrations of plasma ghrelinwas 75.1730±26.5773 in AGA group, 124.1054±109.5087 in non-SGAstunting group, and statistic difference is presented between the two groups(p<0.05).The level in AGA group was lower than in non-SGA stunting group. In non-SGA children, the concentrations of plasma ghrelin was81.749±39.054 in normal weight non-SGA children, 169.377±147.528 inunder weight non-SGA children, and there was statistic difference between the two groups(p<0.05). The level in normal weight non-SGA group waslower than in under weight non-SGA group. In SGA group, Theconcentrations of plasma ghrelin was 51.2029±25.837 in stunting group, 84.1022±38.6833 in normal height group, there was statistic difference betweenthe two groups(p<0.05), The level in stunting group was lower than innormal height group. And, the concentrations of plasma ghrelin was83.5396±38.9604 in normal weight group, 53.0514±26.9328 in under weightgroup, there was no statistic difference between the two groups(p>0.05).⑥There was no correlation between leptin and ghrelin, no matter whatthe children's trophic level was.Conelusions:①In children of age 2-7 years old, SGA children hadshorter stature than normal children, the concentrations of serum leptin in twogroups were no different. It may suggested that the children in SGA groupmay have leptin resistance.②Both the leptin and the Ghrein have importantrole in the children's growth and development. They both may activate GHsecretion. On the other hand, they play different role in maintaining thebalance of energy.③The birth weight may impact the hormone secretion inthe early life,④No matter what the children's trophic level was, there was nocorrelation between leptin and ghrelin.
