Objective: To investigate the espression and clinical significance of survivin and MGMT protein in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC). Methods: The presence and the level of expression of survivin and MGMT protein in 51 cases of ESCC and 18 cases of the normal tissue along the incision margin(TIM) were detected by immunohistochemical techniques(EnVision). Results: Survivin protein was not detected in TIM, but there are 34 positive case in 51 cases(positive rate 66.67%). There was very significant difference between the expression of MGMT protein in ESCC (80.39%) and TIM (16.67%()P<0.01). The positive rates of survivin and MGMT protein was associated with the invasive depth, TNM stage of ESCC (P<0.05). Furthermore, there were relations between the positive rate of survivin portein and the differentiation grade, P<0.01. The expression of MGMT protein has no relation with the differentiation grade, P>0.05. The result shows that their expression have no relations with the age, gender, tumor location, tumor size and metastasis of lymph node of ESCC. The expression of survivin have no relations with that of MGMT (P>0.05).Conclusion: The abnormal expression of survivin and MGMT play important roles in the carcinogenesis course of esophageal cancer. Their expression was associated with the differentiation grade , invasive depth, TNM staging and They may be used as important indexes to the reason analysis and the gene therapy of esophageal squamous cell cancer.
