| Objective:To analyze the role of curative resection following 32p interstitial brachytherapy in recurrent malignant gliomas. Methods: Nine patients with recurrent malignant gliomas were given colloidal 32P to the interstitial space of the tumor through Ommaya reservoirs at the 8th day after operation, which was repeated every 8 weeks for 4 times. As control, another 14 patients with recurrent malignant gliomas received surgery only. All patients were followed up.Results: The median survival time for patients receiving surgery and 32P interstitial brachytherapy were 38.4 weeks and the one-year survival rates was 44.4%. While in patients receiving surgery only, the median survival time and one-year survival rates were 31.4weeks and 28.6% respectively. Compared with surgery only, surgery and 32P interstitial brachytherapy achieved significant improvement in survival in patients with recurrent malignant gliomas (p< 0.05). Karnofsky scores in patients receiving surgery and 32P interstitial brachytherapy were not significantly improved. Conclusion: It suggested that surgery combined with 32P interstitial brachytherapy improve survival of patients with recurrent malignant gliomas, but not affect the life quality of patients. |
