Objective To investigate the expression of PTEN and FHIT in epithelial ovarian tissue including epithelial ovarian cancers, borderline tumors, benign tumors and normal ovary tissues. To study their relations and clinicopathological characteristics in epithelial ovarian cancer(EOC).To explore the potential role of PTEN and FHIT in the epithelial ovarian cancer. Methods Using SP immunohistochemical technique, we examined the expression of PTEN and FHIT proteins in 45 cases of epithelial ovarian cancers, 10 cases of borderline tumors ,10cases of benign tumors and 5 cases of normal ovary tissues .The correlation between the expression of PTEN and FHIT proteins and clinicopathological characteristics in epithelial ovarian cancer was analyzedResults 1. The positive rate of PTEN were 50%,53.3% in borderline ovarian tumors and in epithelial ovarian carcinoma .they are significantly lower than that ovarian cyst and normal ovary. The expression of PTEN was negative relation to pathological type (p<0.025) and was positive relation to pathological stages(p<0.005). and was no relation to lymphatic metastasis(p > 0.05). In different type ovarian cancer The expression of PTEN was low trend. But there was no significant different(p>0.5)2. The positive expression of FHIT was in 10 cases ovarian borderline tumor ,10cases ovarian cyst and 5 cases normal ovary tissue. The positive expression rates of normal ovary tissue was significantly higher in them than in epithelial ovarian cancer (p<0.05).The positive expression of FHIT was relation to histological differentiation of ovarian cancer (p<0.005), but it was no relation to tissue types, lymph node metastasis and clinic pathological staging of ovarian cancer.3.The expression of PTEN protein mostly located in cell plasma, the positive cell distributed dispersively or locally.4. The expression of FHIT protein was located in cell plasma and nucelus, the positive cell distributed dispersively or locally. Conclusion Loss or deficit of PTEN and FHIT play an inhibitor role to epithelial ovarian cancer .Reduced expression of PTEN protein plays an important role in tumor genesis of ovarian cancer. Its altered expression was associated with histological differentation, clinical pathological staging, ovarian cancer. Decreased expression of PTEN gene might be a useful marker for predicting the carcinogenesis and progression of ovarian cancer. In epithelial ovarian carcinomas FHIT expression become decreased, with advanced grade . FHIT may contribute the epithelial ovarian carcinomas to tumorigenesis and aggression. The abnormal FHIT expression was associated with prognosis.
