The first historical records of the "extraordinary organ" is found in the "Huang Di Nei Jing", the subsequent historical records were not as detailed, but nonetheless possesses exposition. This paper is divided into two parts.Part one outlines the literature on the "extraordinary organ". Mainly, it describes the "extraordinary organ" as a whole entity and organizes its literature in the form of its various components, physiological functions, pathology and treatment. As such, origins and development of theories regarding the "extraordinary organ" are clearly displayed. At the same time, discovering many issues that can be explored such as the subjective analysis of the organ has yet to be done. Also, the physiological functions and clinical significance of the "extraordinary organ" lack independence from other entities.The following part is regarding the theoretical issues of the "extraordinary organ" and also explores its history and culture. Firstly, the paper discusses expound and development of theories on the "extraordinary organ".Secondly, it looks into the rise of medical theories from the historical and cultural perspective. The paper also points out that the "extraordinary organ" lacks individual physiologic and pathological characteristics and treatment due to the restriction of TCM five internal organs theory as well as lack of subjective anatomical analysis. Last but not least, the paper mentioned about how Chinese culture and medicine can direct and orientate further theoretical development of the "extraordinary organ".
