| Objective:The aim of this study was to evaluate the thymidine phosphorylase(TP)and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) expressions of tumor cells as a vascularization and prognostic factors for radiotherapy outcome in patients with uterine cervical squamous carcinoma. Methods:In 61 paraffin-embeded tissues from uterine cervical squamous carcinoma which had been treated with radiotherapy (2000.8-2003.4).Pantients had been treated with external whole pelvic irritation with anteroposterior and posteroanterior parallel opposing ports, with a total dose of 46-58Gy of 15MV-X using a linear accelerator. Intracavitary irritation was performed with 192Ir after loading system with a dose of 21-41Gy at point A,and begin just after the center was shielded. The expressions of TP,VEGF and CD34 were determined using immunohistochemistry. We analysed the correlation between the expression of TP,VEGF and MVD,and their relationship with various clinicopathologic parameters, including age, observation days,FIGO stage, histological grade, etc. Results:TP and VEGF expressions were successfully detected in the cytoplasm and/or nucleus of uterine cervical squamous carcinoma.1.TP expression:There were significant differences between TP expression and pathlogical grade,FIGO stage, tumor size(P=0.041, 0.041,0.006),but there was no significant difference between TP expression and age(P=0.326).2.VEGF expression:There significant differences between VEGF expression and pathlogical grade,FIGO stage, tumor size(P=0.016,0.012, 0.037),but there was no significant difference between TP expression and age(P=0.833).3.MVD and various clinicalpathological parameters:There were significant differences between MVD and pathlogical grade,FIGO stage, tumor size,TP expression and VEGF expression(P=0.016,0.047,0.019, 0.002,0.001),but there was no significant diference between MVD and age(P=0.146).4.5-year survival rate and various clinicalpathological parameters: There were significant differences between 5-year survival rate and FIGO stage, tumor size,TP expression and VEGF expression(P=0.000,0.000, 0.020,0.010),but there was no significant diference between 5-year survival rate and age, pathlogical grade(P=0.146,0.354).5.Cox nultivariate regression analysis:We had found that MVD could be independent prognostic factor of the uterine cervical squamous carcinoma(P=0.021).Conclusion:This study showed that thymidine phosphorylase and vascular endothelial growth factor expression may combine to promote angiogenesis during progression of uterine cervical squamous carcinoma, and there was significant differences between TP or VEGF expression and clinical FIGO stage, pathological grade and tumor size.Radiotherapy dosage and MVD could be developed as independent prognostic factors. |
