A Study On Levels Of Gelatioase In Patients With Central Nervous System Infection

Objective: The present study aimed to evaluate the clinic value of gelatinase (MMP-2 and MMP-9) in CNS infection, through measuring the levels of gelatinase (MMP-2 and MMP-9)in serum and CSF in patients with tuberculous meningitis (TBM), viral encephalitis(VE) and control.Methods: The levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in serum and CSF were determined by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) from patients with TBM(n=18) in acute phase and catabasis, 23 patients with VE (n=23) in acute phase and the control(n=11); The levels of albumin in serum and CSF were determined by using bromocresol green and immunoturbidimeter method.Results: In acute phase, the levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in serum and CSF in patients with TBM and VE were obviously higher than those of control group(P<0.01), and the levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in serum and CSF in patients with TBM were obviously higher than those of VE(P<0.01). The levels of CSF albumin(CAlb) and CSF albumin index in patients with TBM and VE were obviously higher than those of control group(P<0.01), and the levels of CSF albumin and CSF albumin index in patients with TBM were obviously higher than those of VE group(P<0.01). In the group of TBM, the levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in serum and CSF, CSF albumin and CSF albumin index during the catabasis were lower than acute stage (P<0.01). Serum albumin(SAlb) among the groups of TBM, VE and control was homology(P>0.05).The coefficients between serum MMP-2 and CSF MMP-2 in VE, serum MMP-9 and CSF MMP-9 in VE, serum MMP-9 and CSF MMP-9 in TBM were 0.735, 0.435, 0.808(P<0.05) respectively,there wre positive correlational; the coefficient between serum MMP-2 and CSF MMP-2 in TBM, was 0.268 (P>0.05),no liner correlation.The coefficients between CSF albumin and CSF MMP-2 in VE, CSF albumin and CSF MMP-9 in VE, CSF albumin and CSF MMP-2 in TBM were 0.834, 0.69, 0.951(P<0.01) respectively,there wre positive correlational; the coefficient between CSF albumin and CSF MMP-9 in TBM, was 0.087 (P>0.05),no liner correlation.Conclusions: The levels of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in serum and CSF, CSF albumin and CSF albumin index were all enhanced, TBM were obviously higher than those of VE in acute phase and the catabasis were lower than acute stage in patients with TBM.They potentially have an important value in judgement of BBB impairment, treatment and predict of prognosis in TBM and VE.
