Objective. To investigate EBD technique guided by ultrasound, and to evaluate its efficacy, complications and clinical value.Methods:40 cases of EBD operations guided by ultrasound and 54 cases of operations guided by X-ray done by one doctor from gastroenterology department of First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University during the period of May 2003 to March 2008 were retrospectively analyzed. The success rate, efficacy and the postoperative complications of endoscopic biliary drainage between ultrasound and X-ray method were compared, and we tried to provide the basis for its clinical application. Results:The success rate of biliary tube placement of guided by ultrasound group were fewer than guided by X-ray group, with were 90.0%and 94.4%(p>0.05).Both ultrasound and X-ray methods could reduce serum bilirubin and improve clinical symptoms significantly, but there was no significant difference between two groups.Postoperative complications such as abdominal pain, fever and increased amylase were not found in ultrasound-guided group, while 3 cases occurred in X-ray guided group.Conclusions:Ultrasound-guided endoscopic biliary drainage could avoid some unfavorable factors such as allergies,X-ray radiation, and have some advantages such as real-time display, mobile convenience, can be carried out under the bed emergency room treatment. Under cooperation of endoscopy and ultrasound doctor,EBD guided by ultrasound can achieve the same clinical effect as X-ray guidance for right indications. We conclude that EBD guided by ultrasound is a safe and effective method that deserving a wider clinical application.
