ObjectiveTo know about the current situation and service capacity of occupational health service agencis certificated by Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau and present the basic information for policy-maker to improve the certification and regular management of occupational health service agencies in future.Methods32 occupational health service agencies, which were certificated before 2007 by the Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau, were investigated. The human resources, avaiable equipment and work achievement in the specific period were enquired with questionaries. The quality of their work were assessed with check-lists. The reason for the variance of hunamn resources, the avaiable equipment and work achievement of different agencies were traced, based on the certificated tasks, the owners, such as CDC, private and the locations etc. The correspndening suggestion was presented.ResultsThe number of occupational health service agency is not enough to meet the requriments of industries. There is big variance of human resources, avaiable equipment and work achivement among different agencies, the agencies from CDC have well equiped and strong professional team, but the work amount is relative low compared with the agencies founded by private. The agencies located in the city center have finished few work though they have advanced equipment and more professional staff. The vairance of work quality was big among different aganencies and mostly related to the existing management system of agency, generally the agencies from CDC are better. It seems that few agencies did very few work in the past time. The reason probably was that they had no motivation because of some obvious un-support polices, though they had certificated.ConclusionThe occupational health service agencies should be increased to meet the increasing requirments. The certificating system should be discussed to encourage more agencies to involve in such activities. The succedent regulations and supervision should be reinforced to ensure the smooth and legal running of certificated occuaptional health service agencies.
