Objective: To assess the efficacy of propofol to the brain injury protection. Methods: Medline, Ovid Medline, Journals@Ovid Full Text , sciencedirect,PubMed,proquest, Chinese Biomedical Database, Chinese Conference data were searched up to March 2009, the studies as references of these articles were also searched. Randomized controlled trials comparing propofol with a control group, conducted during operation performed on adults were included. The data were quantified by Meta- analysis. Results: 13 RCTs meet all eligibility criteria, a total of 362 patients included (185 in the treatment group and 177 in the control group). The methodological quality was generally low. When all trials were pooled, The weighted mean differences (WMD)ofET(endothel),NO(Nitricoxide),MDA(Malondialdehyde)were-24.23pg/L[95%confidenceinterval(95%CI)was-29.83~-18.62pg/L] , -53.25μmol/L ( 95%CI was -123.58~16.77μmol/L)and -1.13nmol/L(95%CI为-1.79~-0.47nmol/L). the studie of Nitric oxide (NO) has a significant heterogencity.Conclusion:.Propofol has the efficacy to the brain injury protection. But further studies which are well designed are needed.
