Background The treatment of the osteonecrosis of femoral head (ONFH) is a tough task in the field of orthopedics practice .Femoral head collapse bases on the absorption of the necrotic bone. The distance and speed of reparation can influence the absorptive procedure. No effective therapeutic method exits which can stop or reverse the pathologic procedure, they definitely ends in the collapse of femoral head and further osteoarthritis of hip which is due to many causes, the relative more important one of it is lack of good animal model. Objective To establish an animal model of osteonecrosis of femoral head in canine like human by improved liquid nitrogen freezing. Methods Sixteen adult canines were divided into four groups at random. They were suffered an instantly refrigeration with liquid nitrogen at the unilateral femoral head. All animals were observed periodically about their radiographic, gross and pathologic manifestation of the femoral head.Result There were significant changes in radiographic, gross and pathologic manifestation of the femoral head which being frozen instantly by liquid nitrogen. Conclusion Improved liquid nitrogen freezing for osteonecrosis of the femoral head in canine model provided a simple and convenient method to establish the animal model of osteonecrosis of femoral head like human.
