Objective To study the clinical features and method of diagnosis and treatment in appendiceal carcinoid,in order to increase the rate of preoperative diagnosis, and find the way of rational therapy to improve the prognosis. Methods The clinical data of 5 cases with the appendiceal carcinoid from Nov 2001 to Feb 2009 were retrospectively analyzed.Result The diagnosis was established pathologically after operation in all 5 patients. The tumor was located at the tip in 3 patients,at the middle in 1 and at the base in 1. The diameter of tumor was less than lcm in 1 patient, between 1 and 2cm in 2 and larger than 2cm in 2.Tumor invasion was confined to submucosa in 1 patient,to muscle and serosa layer in 3 patients and beside the serosa in 1 patient. Two patients had partial nodular transfer.Appendectomy was performed in 1 case, right hemicolectomy in 3 cases and ileocecal junction resection in 1 case. The majority of carcinoid of appendix was typical carcinoid histologically except one goblet cell carcinoid. All these 5 patients received follow-up from 1 to 7 years. No tumor recurrence and metastasis occurred. Conclusion Appendiceal carcinoid is rare and difficult to be diagnosed preoperatively. The operation is the major method of treatment and the style of operation depend on the size, location and invasive depth of the tumor. The effect of chemotherapy and other adjunctive therapy need to be investigated futher.
