Objective: To identify independent risk factors associated with in-hospital cardiovascular events among patients undergoing successful stent implantation procedure. Methods: A retrospective analysis was done in Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) patients undergoing successful Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) procedure with stent implantation from January 2003 to March 2008 at ChongQing First Affiliated Hospital. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression technique with backward elimination technique were used to find the independent risk factors of in-hospital cardiovascular events after successful stent implantation procedure..Results: A total 260 ACS patients with successful stent implantation procedure were collected. Overall there were 41 patients (15.77%) who experienced cardiovascular events after successful stent implantation procedure. The cardiovascular events found were heart failure in 23 patients (8.85%). Second to third degree atrioventricular block in 12 patients (4.62%), multiple premature ventricular contractions in 6 patients (2.31%), cardiogenic shock in 2 patients (0.77%), in-hospital death in 2 patients (0.77%), and ventricular tachycardia in 1 patient (0.38%). From the logistic regression analysis, there were a total 5 variables that were identified to be associated with increased risk of in-hospital cardiovascular events after successful stent implantation procedure, included age≥80 years old, ST segment and/or T wave change on electrocardiography on admission, plasma creatinine >110μmol/L on admission, hemoglobin <110g/L on admission, and the number of vessel disease; while the number of stent implanted significantly associated with lower risk of cardiovascular events after successful stent implantation procedure. Conclusion: Even after successful stent implantation procedure in ACS patients, some proportion of patient still experience cardiovascular events. Five risk factors have been identified to be significantly associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events after stent implantation procedure. Of note, age≥80 years old is the single most powerful predictor of the cardiovascular events after successful stent implantation procedure.
