| Objective Primary hyperparathyroidism is exceptional in China. Surgeons were not familiar with the disease because it rarely happened. And also because of the lack of specificities of its symptoms, primary hyperparathyroidism is easily misdiagnosed. Bone disease caused by primary hyperparathyroidism does great harm to the patients' health, and it's difficult to differentiate it from bone tumors. The aim of this article is to investigate the current situation and causes of misdiagnosis between bone disease caused by primary hyperparathyroidism and bone tumors so as to develop some strategies for reducing misdiagnosis. Methods A retrospective study was performed in 280 cases of primary hyperparathyroidism between 1999 and 2009, combining with one patient with primary hyperparathyroidism who was diagnosed recently in orthopedic department of Qilu hospital to investigate the current situation and causes of misdiagnosis between bone disease caused by primary hyperparathyroidism and bone tumors. Results In the 281 cases of misdiagnosed primary hyperparathyroidism, male 110, female 171, the youngest is 12, the oldest is 80. The symptoms of bone are the main clinical manifestations inl83(65.12%) cases, and 52(18.51%) cases are misdiagnosed as 6 different bone tumors, including bone cyst(15 cases), giant cell tumor(10 cases) and so on.Conclusions Primary hyperparathyroidism can affect all bones of people, and the symptoms are lack of characteristics. It's easily misdiagnosed as bone cyst and other bone tumors, The misdiagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism is mainly caused by the poor professional knowledge of doctors and the lack of specificities of its symptoms. When the doctors learn more about the bone disease caused by primary hyperparathyroidism and bone tumors, pay more attention to the high risk group of primary hyperparathyroidism, the misdiagnosis rate will be reduced. |
