Objective To evaluate the effects and the safety of Combined Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Enterococcus and Bacillus cereus Tablets (Live) on very low birth weight infants (VLBWI) feeding, and the affection on early growth development. Methods 49 VLBWI (Hereditary malformation, heavy asphyxia, serious cardiopulmonary disease and early infection were eliminated) were divided into treatment and control groups randomly. The two groups were given routine premature infant nursing and treatment. Early initiation of amino acids was given from the second day, lipid from the third day and timely increases in the components from 0.5 g/kg/day to 3.0-3.5 g/kg/day. Glucose should be provided at 4~6 mg/min/kg as soon after birth as possible and increased progressively by the speed of 1~2 mg/(kg·min), and the maximum at 11 -13 mg/(kg·min). Early initiation of feeding of human milk or formula may be started in all prematures. The treatment group were given the Combined Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Enterococcus and Bacillus cereus Tablets (Live) 0.25 g per time bid for two weeks by oral or gastrogavage. The control was given water at the same time. The sufficient feeding day and the recovery of birth weight day were observed. Meanwhile the incidence and adverse reaction of feeding intolerance were observed. At the age of 28 days body weight, height and head circumference were measured for calculating speed of growth. Results The feeding intolerance incidence was 16.7% and 44.0% respectively. There was significant difference between the two groups. The time to achieve full feeding was 16.50±2.98 d in treatment group and 20.80±3.22 d its control. There was different between them. The recovery of birth weight day in treatment group was less than in control. There was no adverse reaction be found. Body weight, the speed of body weight, height and head circumference growth was 0.66±0.13 cm/week, 0.83±0.09 cm/week, 16.31±3.72 g/d respectively in treatment group and 0.59±0.19 cm/week, 0.75±0.10 cm/week, 13.47±3.35 g/d in control. Head circumference growth was no different from its control, while there was significantly different of body weight and height between them. Conclusion Feeding intolerance could be improved by Combined Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Enterococcus and Bacillus cereus Tablets(Live) . Early nutriture of premature infant also beamelioranced . There was no adverse reaction be found in the study. This prompts that Combined Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Enterococcus and Bacillus cereus Tablets(Live) is safety for early premature infants.
