Objective: To investigate the demand for male nurses and cognitive attitude to different people in four top hospitals in Changsha of Hunan province. analyse the relevant factors that cause the shortage of male nurses, to explore ways to set up a sound system to improve the status of the shortage of male nurses.Methods: This study used a questionnaire survey method, using self-designed anonymous questionnaire survey. According to the different survey objects, design two questionnaires, one questionnaire: for doctors and nurses; another questionnaire: for patients and their families. Using cluster random sampling method,investigate 558 doctors or nurses and 607 patients or their family members in four top hospitals in Changsha of Hunan province, find their cognition, attitude and influencing factors to male nurses. statistical software SPSS13.0 was used in statistical analysis, statistical methods including descriptive statistical analysis, independent samples t test, analysis of variance and non-parametric test, multiple stepwise regression analysis.Results:1. The cognitive rate to male nurses in doctors and nurses is 96.1%. compared the needs of the male nurses,the result is psychiatric department (89.4%), emergency department (57.0%), intensive care unit (57.0%), operating room ( 51.2%), supply room (10.2%), others (8.5%).2. The attitude of doctors and nurses to male nurses is positive. Whether have male nurses in hospitals will influence the attitude to the male nurses and have statistically significant difference (P<0.05), the influencing factor of the attitudes is whether the hospital have a male nurse ((β|(?))= 0.129, P<0.05 ). 3. Doctors and nurses think there are 21 influencing factors that cause the shortage of male nurses. according to the average score,the top 10 from high to low are: the traditional concept, the high pressure, sense of occupational accomplishment is too small, the concept that nursing is the duty of women, low wages for nurses, often work in shifts and circadian disorders, the impact of public opinion, the low social status of nurses, patients and their families asking too much of nurses, the opportunity for further study is too few.4.The cognitive rate to male nurses in patients and their families is 61.3%, compared the needs of the male nurses,the result is psychiatric (70.5%), operating room (41.2%), emergency department (41.0%), intensive care unit (35.5 %), supply room (9.5%), others (7.6%).5. The attitude of patients and their families to male nurses is neutral. The attitude to male nurses of people with different gender, different education and different occupational has statistically significant difference (P <0.05), the influencing factors of the attitudes are gender ((β|(?)) = 0.415 , P<0.05), education ((β|(?)) = 0.381 , P<0.05).6.Patients and their families think there are 19 influencing factors that cause the shortage of male nurses. according to the average score,the top 10 from high to low are: the traditional concept, the concept that nursing is the duty of women , Personal interests do not match ,the opportunity for promotion is too few, the opportunity for further study is too few, sense of occupational accomplishment is too small, the high pressure, Hospitals don't want male nurses , Dislike the command of the female boss , worried about making mistakes in nursing job .Conclusion: The attitude of doctors and nurses or patients and their families to male nurses is positive, especially of doctors and nurses. The doctors and nurses in hospitals which have male nurses can understand the advertanges of male nurse well in clinical care work. The influencing factors of the attitudes to male nurse are gender and education. Hospitals have the demand of male nurses. And male nurses suit for nursing job in psychiatric department, emergency department, intensive care unit, operating room and supply room. There are many influencing factors that cause the shortage of male nurses, at the same time, the traditional concept is one of the most important.
