| Objective To study the surgical characteristics and precautions of the anterior combined with posterior fixation in surgical treatment of the ankylosing spondylitis complicating Thoracolumbar vertebral fractures. Methods The 5 patients with ankylosing spondylitis with thoracic lumbar stress fracture cases were analyzed retrospectively. All the 5 cases of thoracic vertebral fracture occurred between the T8-L2, which are stress fractures. These fractures all claimed the three columns of the spine. Two patients had spinal cord injures. All of the five patients were treated surgically. Four different surgical procedures were introduced in our hospital, but all of them are the anterior-posterior fixation. Results Five patients had an average of 20 months'follow-up. Two patients with preoperative neurological deficits have been improved. Radiographic examinations showed evidence of fusion in al 1 of the 5 patients. Conclusions Most of the fractures in ankylosing spondylitis are stress fracture, often involving the three columns of spine. Anterior combined with posterior internal fixation, appropriate partial decompression and bone grafting in the surgical, which treat the thoracolumbar stress fracture in ankylosing spondylitis fracture, will achieve of the result of fracture union and neurological improvement. |
