PurposeTo evaluate frequency and clinical importance of unsuspected extraurinary findings in CTU examinations obtained for diagnostic workup of hematuria.Method and MaterialsRetrospectively evaluate 512 consecutive CTU examinations obtained between January and November 2009 for the diagnostic workup of hematuria in the first hospital of CMU. Extraurinary findings were categorized by clinical importance(minor= no workup, moderate=further workup, and high=immediate workup) and examined by type of examination, age and sex.ResultsAt least one EUF was seen in 62.3% of patients. Extraurinary findings were significantly more frequent in patients≥45 years than in younger patients (p< 0.01).80.9% of patients without any extraurinary finding were younger than 45 years. Extraurinary findings with high clinical importance were seen in 31/512 patients (6.1%), these findings included 5 pneumonias,3 pulmonary malignancies,6 liver malignancies,2 colon malignancy,4 acute bowel inflammations,5 aortic aneurysms and 6 others. The number of extraurinary findings did not significantly differ between males and females. Extraurinary findings tended to be more frequently found when with contrast enhanced (74.6% versus 47.4%, p<0.01). ConclusionBecause of the frequency of clinically important extraurinary findings in patients with hematuria during CTU examination, more attention is required.
