ObjectiveTo investigate hippocampal volumetric changes in acute phase after febrile convulsion (FC) in children.Methods3.0 T brain MRI was performed on 30 normal controls and 30 children with FC(15 with simple and 15 with prolonged FC respectively), and hippocampal MR volumetry for both sides was then compared between all groups.ResultsIn control group, average volume of the right hippocampus was significantly larger than that of the left side (P=0.027). Compared to the control group, both the left and right hippocampus were enlarged averagely for the total case group (30), simple FC group (15) and prolonged FC group (15) with significant differences (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference on hippocampal volumes for either side within the case groups (P=0.062).Conclusion1. Hippocampal volume is enlarged in acute phase after FC.2. Hippocampal structural changes are not obvious between simple and prolonged FC in acute stage.
